OpenAI has launched a group chat feature for ChatGPT in select regions.

Key Points:

  • Available to Free, Plus, and Team users on mobile and web

  • Groups can include 1-20 people and are invitation-only

  • Private chats remain completely private

  • ChatGPT (GPT-5.1 Auto) can participate in group conversations with features like search, image generation, and file uploads

  • Usage limits only count when ChatGPT responds, not for human-to-human messages

  • Members can leave anytime; most can remove others

  • Extra safety features for users under 18

  • OpenAI describes this as a "small first step" toward more shared experiences

  • This follows OpenAI's earlier launch of Sora 2, a TikTok-style social media app

  • Group chat is now available in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan
